» Stethoscopes - Fast Facts
Stethoscopes are medical devices that are used to hear sounds from within the body. Generally stethoscopes are used to listen to the heart, lungs, and intestinal tract but can also be used to listen to blood flow through peripheral vessels and the developing heart of an unborn baby in a pregnant woman.
The stethoscope is a very important noninvasive tool used by medical professionals and all health care workers and students will be trained in the use of them. Stethoscopes can be used to listen to humans, fetuses, and animals to detect normal and abnormal cardiac, respiratory, arterial, venous, intestinal, uterine, and fetal sounds.
Most stethoscopes have Y shaped rubber tubing that is attached to the diaphragm and the bell. This shape allows the sound to travel up through the tubing into the earpieces. Stethoscopes usually come with a two sided sound detecting device that allows both high pitched and lower pitch sounds to be detected.
There are different types of stethoscopes and each one serving a different function. The binaural stethoscope is designed for use with both ears and is the type that all physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals use on a daily basis. Single stethoscopes are designed for use in one ear. Differential stethoscopes allow sounds at two different body sites to be compared while electronic stethoscopes allow sounds to be electronically amplified such as listening to the heart of an unborn fetus.
Stethoscopes are used to diagnose several heart related illnesses and conditions and the stethoscope must be moved around to different places in order to hear sounds from all parts of the heart.
Several upper respiratory infections such as bronchitis can be detected with a stethoscope These infections and conditions can be detected by an individual taking deep breaths in and out several upper respiratory infections and conditions can be detected.
Stethoscopes can carry germs that can be transmitted from patient to patient or even from doctor to patient and vice versa. There are several ways to clean and sanitize stethoscopes. Wall sanitizers are a very popular way for hospitals and medical offices to clean stethoscopes. UV light is used to sanitize stethoscopes in a matter of seconds by swiping the bell and/or diaphragm through the device.
